Yesterday I was out on my travels and stopped at a service station and I stumbled across this American beast with a fitting number plate ·

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

DISCLAIMER: our number plate laws are a bit restrictive so can’t have it perfectly spell out words, in this case the 66 means it was registered on or after 1st Sept ‘16

For a second I thought this was 4muddyfeet’s dad’s Mustang, since it looks to be exactly identical. His has a different plate though:

Love how you guys call it a number plate: here in US America, depending on where you live, it’s tags, license tags, or license plates.

I agree, does ruin the back end a little bit

it’s also called license plates over here (though less common) and very rarely it’s called a registration plate

I know Amber signals are required iced there, but why not leave 2if the three taillight ‘strips’ red and make the third clear for the amber signal...would look far less tacky!

Well in fairness it’s a plate and it has numbers on it...

It looks like someone blacked out parts and chromed the rest.

Ford’s choice! Two of the the three are red and one orange when illuminated. They could have chosen to make all appear red and still (where appropriate) show orange when lit. BMW do this on some models.

On this 3 series the lighter section on the top right shines orange.

And always license plate s , even in states that only require one on the back. Just like car keys are still keys, even if the door and ignition are the same, or if there’s no keys at all.

Exactly! Clear lenses on a taillight are just wrong to me!

Amber lights don’t need to be iced. They just need to light up amber. Many cars don’t have these white indicators, yet do have the mandated amber lights. This Mustang taillight design is a decision by Ford, not by legislation.

True - I always liked to shorten it to ‘tags’ but near DC, where I grew up, it was nearly always ‘license plates.’

Although there is the rather troubling “fob” which I believe refers to that thing you keep in your pocket in proximity to the car in order to start it.

Ah, whoops....didn’t mean to have ‘iced’ in that sentence at all...that was autocorrect, very sorry! Was typing quickly at work there!

Yes, I know the amber bulbs don’t have to have amber coverings, if that is what you mean - they aren’t required to here either. I’m just saying that all clear taillights looks very odd to me as headlights are clear and taillights are generally red. They could’ve made two of the three strips red tinted for the tails, but left one clear for ambers is what I was trying to get across and it would’ve looked much better IMHO! :)

I certainly agree. And there have been lots of cars where the unlit indicator lenses looked red and only became amber once the bulb lit up. Ford could’ve opted for those. Yet they picked clear. The only reason I can come up with is that Ford thinks it looks good.

Example from the 90s:
